agree. i hope to see more improvement at the five spot than has come so far. maybe it's just around the corner.
Why is there something rather than nothing?

I think the biggest (and no doubt most frustrating) challenge for the new big men is balancing being physically aggressive with staying out of foul trouble -- which is often a problem for inexperienced big men. Stockard (7.5), Mawien (6.8), Shadd (6.8), and Sallah (6.7) are all averaging over 5 fouls per 40. While none of them play anything close to 40 minutes, it does mean that they have problems staying in a game for any length of time.
Here are some game by game numbers for Mawien:
Game / minutes / fouls
American / 19 / 1
UMKC / 4 / 4
UC Irvine / 18 / 1
No, Arizona / 16 / 4
Arizona State /14 / 5
George Wash. / 29 / 4
ORU / 19 / 4
Vandy / 16 / 2
SC Upstate / 14 / 1
Tulsa /27 / 4
In the six games where Mawien has had 4 or more fouls, he has played only 109 minutes while picking up 25 fouls, which is a per 40 rate of 9.2 fouls per 40. Like the others, he is struggling to find a balance between aggressive play and fouling so much he can't stay on the court. It is a work in progress for sure.

I was hoping that one of the new bigs would be a mean SOB. We don't need a finesse 5, we need a brute under there.tmcats wrote:agree. i hope to see more improvement at the five spot than has come so far. maybe it's just around the corner.

I'm with you on that Dave. If we just had a physical big body guy who could rebound and defend the rim it would make a huge difference. Granted everyone is after those guys but we just seem to get the more finesse types. Sallah has that mentality to some degree but just isn't that big and is foul prone.pulitzerdave wrote:I was hoping that one of the new bigs would be a mean SOB. In one instance, Mawien had perfect position for an offensive board and got the rebound only to have the ref call him for a foul. It was a horrible call and the ref knew it after he called it. Like Dean, his first couple of years, I think they over call fouls on Mawien and Maedo. They’re newcomers and will have to pay their dues.

I was hoping we could get Shakur Juiston off that team. He's averaging close to 14 points and 11+ rebounds per game with UNLV.Wildwilly73 wrote:Guess we should have gotten the 7 footer from Hutch Juco.

If you have to be persuaded, reminded, pressured, lied to, incentivized, coerced, bullied, socially shamed, guilt-tripped, threatened, punished and criminalized...you can be absolutely certain that what is being promoted is not in your best interest
