Not really. Consider all the automatic bids from minor conferences that TCU would clobber. We all know that many of those teams, although they made it into the field legitimately because of the rules, are not among the best 69 teams in the country. The NIT experience can be what a team makes of it. Either you're pouting because you didn't make the NCAA field and you then play like crap, or you approach it with a good attitude and make your program and team better moving forward.tmcats wrote:i think the opposite. nit champion means, essentially, that you're the 69th best team in the field.

If you win it with a bunch of seniors and not much underclass contributions, it probably doesn't mean much. If you're bringing a good core back AND have added some good pieces then I think it has some significance.

Why is there something rather than nothing?

Wichita State won the NIT, finished with AP rank 18th in the country the next year and made it to the final four the following year with a lot of the same players. Van Vleet and Baker.
You win the NIT by having a good team that is playing well at the end of the year. If most players come back, you'll be pretty good the following year.

Maybe I was not clear. Win the NIT and have most players coming back and you will be good the year immediately after your NIT run.

I think what you initially wrote was very clear.
"Is there a more overvalued variable in sports than nit champion?"
That leaves no room for interpretation and there were no caveats.

I didn't write that and I don't even think that. You may have me confused with a different poster.pulitzerdave wrote:I think what you initially wrote was very clear.

Yes, it was meant for tmcats. I don't know how it got on your post. Sorry.
