Not to be snarky, but Sports is not an education field. It is an extracurricular activity in which, in the interest of competition and gamesmanship, the sponsors of the activity agree to various rules in order that the competitive field can be leveled to make the sport entertaining and to allow all who participate a somewhat even opportunity to learn and grow while competing and challenging themselves. Okay, obviously it is all about the Benjamin's now, but it is still not an educational field, it is an extracurricular activity.

Even at my senior age it is difficult for me to defend 1960's Amateurism in Colleges.

Let me offer a similar counter example - a student is in the Extracurricular Club "Young Democrats of Kansas". If they get paid for preparing a mailer, they do not get expelled from the club.

So you're saying Michael Jordan should have been able to play for North Carolina between his games with the Bulls?

It means Kaluma wasn't invited to the NBA Draft combine. That doesn't mean he can't be drafted or sign an NBA G/D League contract. But it probably means that the pathway for the NBA gets that much tougher.

I am sure he has a standing NIL offer to return.

He’s also in the portal and could be shopping what other programs would offer him for PFP.

In my opinion, if you do not sign a contract to play, and you have eligibility, you can play.

I think it was just a good move by Kaluma to protect himself to enter the portal. If he decides the NBA won't be his immediate option, that gives him options, particularly if K-State has moved on. I think Tang likes him but probably told him he would love to have him back but would also have to be looking so there may not necessarily be a spot for him, dependent upon when he makes his decision.

I hope Kaluma eventually returns and that our coaching staff works with him to clean up his game and make it more ready for the NBA. He makes too many unorthodox moves and dipsy dos. The euro moves are cool but only work when used properly. I think he would get hammered with a lot of that stuff in the league. He needs to return to fundamentals and play within himself. Give it up the dreams for now and focus on cleaning up his game and improving the next 10 or 12 months and he will likely make the list next spring. Work on passing, 3 point shooting and mid-range jumpers. I feel the talent is there.
