News from 3MAW podcast on DNG, Kaluma and Glover

Post by SCKSCat » April 17th, 2024, 2:53 pm

Just listened to the latest one with Coach Tang.
N'Guessan is back for next year.
Kuluma exploring NBA draft chances. Tang fully supports this and would welcome him back.
Glover is trying to recover, and play next year.

Listening to the podcast right now. It is interesting how Coach Tang mentioned how crazy and unsustainable (his words) the NIL situation is right now. He basically said if we can hold down the fort for 2-3 more years, he is hoping that there will be guidelines implemented to bring some sanity to this whole thing. Just reading between the lines, he seemed to think that we were in a good situation with NIL until he started seeing some of the crazy numbers kids are demanding.

I thought the comments about NIL Tang made seemed to express an air of frustration. We need bigs and maybe we have been priced out of the market. There are a bunch of big programs with big NIL wallets out trolling for big fishes to fill out their rosters. I see Kentucky is pursuing Baba Miller. I starting to think we may be SOL landing bigs. Maybe we can get a serviceable center or power forward like McNair. I am still befuddled why Colbert left. The news that David is coming back is big. I would not be surprised if Kaluma comes back. I wish we could recruit a big. I was disappointed not getting Ngongba.

I believe we will get a post. Will he be the 2nd or 4th or 10th on the list? Who knows. But I don’t believe every big is going to command $1 million dollars. Many are going to be a fraction of that. I do think that the culture and going to a program you believe can win are still factors, it’s just pay for play (aka NIL) is now a part of it also. And I think the percentage of the importance for each depends on the player.

I think we’re probably already better on the perimeter than last year, so it may be a big or two that are more role types. Play defense, rebound and score occasionally, rather than a more dominant presence will fill the need. Especially if Kaluma comes back. I think DNG will be more offensive next year. And if Buddy and Manning can take some steps forward, role playing bigs like a Iyala or McNair should be very effective.

I listened yesterday afternoon on my way home from work. It was a good podcast, but I agreed with Tang on DY going straight to the question about Arkansas job. Guys like Tang and Kleiman help keep those podcasters in business, and by the sound of Tang's voice when he started his answer, I could tell that it is a very thin line for those guys to cross or not cross. In the end, Tang praised both guys, so it ended well.

A couple of lines from Tang that I though would make good posters for my classroom: 1) Wise people learn from others' mistakes, and smart people learn from their own mistakes. 2) Don't mess with happy.

I love Coach Tang and want him here for a long time, because I think he has what it takes to bring a title to Manhattan, but I will say, the "cliche" talk does nothing for me. Coaching in HS has sickened me on all of that. Everybody has a t-shirt with some cliche on it that doesn't mean a thing, because the words are shallow. Talk is cheap. I'm sure he means what he says, but I just don't listen to it. Give me results.

I assume you agree with the cliches though. Maybe it does not do anything for you but other people might like to hear it. For example, how can saying. "Do'nt mess with happy" be a bad thing.

The positive results you are looking for include DNG electing to come back after two years of seeing this staff up close. Maybe keeping Kaluma. Glover coming back. Three freshmen all coming back even though they got limited playing time. Rich's high school team mate Jones deciding to join the program. All signs the coaches are being well received by the players.

Signing a high level guard who was first on your transfer list. Competing for the services of other high impact transfers.

Negatives results:
Two year starter Cam moving on for NIL, change of scenery or other unknown reasons.
Being beat out for some high level recruits and maybe being outbid.
Not making the tourney this year and not solving the tov issue.

A.J. Hoggard is going through the draft process while keeping his college eligibility for 2024-25. But Tom Izzo said definitively this week on @TheGame730AM that if Hoggard returns to college, it won't be at Michigan State https://mlive.com/spartans/2024/04/tom- ... state.html

Compare this to what Coach Tang said yesterday about Arthur Kaluma trying to decide whether to declare for the NBA draft or to return to KSU. Paraphrasing, Tang said he is doing everything he can to support Arthur as he and his family decides what to do, and would welcome him back with open arms.

I interpret Izzo saying, "I don't like the portal, and if you leave tough luck Buddy, you are on your own." (this my polite version)
