Blow-by

Post by hilltopwildcat » March 15th, 2024, 8:12 am

Did my eyes deceive me or did hairpiece give Cincinnati coach Wes Miller a "blow-by" handshake after the game on Wednesday night?

In this era of germs, why do we force teams to shake hands? We should do the congratulations/stick it up your wazoo line virtually. Sarcastic comments seem appropriate given the Great Sage and High Guru and Dean of College Basketball Bill Self has declared the handshake decorum expected, but not applicable to him. Kind of like kissing the ring of royalty.
So which coaches are royalty?
I think what a coach says about another coach in a press conference is more impressive and important than dang handshake when your emotions are high.

Coaches and players are very competitive - they have to be. If it were me, the only time I would not be doing a blow by handshake is if my team won by a large margin. Maybe that makes me a bad sport. But if it was a really close game and I lost, I would still be so amped up and crushed by the close loss I don't think I could switch off those emotions immediately and go smile and shake hands - it would be the blow by hand shake. If my team lost by a big margin, I would be mad at how we played, etc. and wouldn't want to shake hands then either. The only reason Bill Self thinks this way, in my opinion, is that he almost always wins.

And the players have to do the same thing. Not easy to do. And rather crazy.

Germs are the same today as they were in yesteryear. Folks are just more germ conscious these days thanks to Covid.

May be better to do the handshaking before the game. Like boxing. Better than after the TKO.

But some modicum of decorum and sportsmanship is a good thing.

(although I think boxers sometimes do both before and after)

Handshakes after the game could be voluntary rather than forced, kinda like pro football.

It is probably better to end the handshake line because of the possibilities of a misunderstanding or even a fight.

My nephew is a high school coach in small school Missouri and says the handshake line trash talking is terrible at some of these "Nice little country schools" and there is growing sentiment to just stop the practice.

i've written before, bob knight always objected to the practice and refused to participate for reasons that should be obvious to all. and that's in a day when people were more civil than today.
