Re: cats v. wvu - monday, 6pm, espn2 ...
Back from the game.
Good crowd except for students. Fewest number of students I can ever remember unless they were on break. Considering all the work Tang has put in supporting students, it was really inexcusable.
I am totally OK with how we won that game. WVU has players and they got on a roll making tough guarded shots. Actually, seemed like the few misses from three in the second half came on open shots.
Each game has it's own story and how we won makes no difference when we play Cinci. Now need to find a way to get two of the next three.
Also, Perry's game tonight was a match for anything Nowell did last year. Not better. But just as good.

In his postgame presser, Tang called out the no-show students in a gentle, but firm way. I wonder why the turnout was lower than normal? They are usually the most reliable fans.

If I remember right, Tang made a push to get Battle into Manhattan through the portal. If the Cats would have been successful in doing that......GoCats wrote: ↑February 26th, 2024, 10:00 pmGoing off this, I’m not sure Cincinnati has a player like Battle. I know Skillings is really good, but I think Battle is in a league of his ownpharaohcat wrote: ↑February 26th, 2024, 9:58 pmWe were not as good as we looked in the 1st 1/2 or as bad as we looked in the 2nd 1/2! Battle is a hell of a player and we had to take out Kaluma because of foul trouble. Like the fight in this team it would have been easy to fold up the tent but we found a way to get the win!!!! Move on!!

How do you think WVU accumulated the talent they have? Why did high profile players like Battle, Edwards and Kerris (?) stayed when Huggins was canned?
$$$$$NIL. Supposedly WVU has one of the most well funded NIL collectives.
We have 3 basketball programs in KS NIL donors can support. Wichita State has Koch support. KU has a fan base with a lot of rich people. Our fan base for the most part are common folk just getting by and they support both basketball and football. I am surprised that we got Perry and Kaluma. We only have 1 2024 recruit. You will never convince me that Ngongba was not enticed to go to Duke because of NIL.

morning afterthoughts ...
1. it reminded me of when coach weber had ku down 16 or so at half only to lose it in the second - migraine;
2. cam is 4 of 13 with 3 turnovers but, but, but 9 of 10 from the stripe and 8 boards - inconsistence on steriods;
3. manning gets in the game but he's the only not-play-hard-chart negative (-2) - suggesting why he doesn't;
4. tylor does it again, 29 points, plays 43 minutes, but arthur only 13 and 27 - the reason state collapsed;
5. what would bob huggins have accomplished with that wvu roster?
6. battle put on the best single half shooting performance i've seen all year - 6 of 9 from three;
7. 8,813 butts in the seats - thought about gene blowing me off;
8. coach tang not happy - louisville awaits, twitter meatheads;
9. i can't forget will mcnair - 6 of 8 and 7 boards - trailing only dng's 10;
10. i knew when it went overtime, it was over - 12 straight for coach tang is truly amazing coaching.

I honestly don’t remember Battle being one of the portal targets. But I also think he committed to wvu pretty quick.
However, if we had gotten Battle I think it’s Glover who we don’t get more than likely, which means they would have relied more on Ames as the backup to Perry from the get go. Just my opinion.
But he would have been a tremendous get. Actually I think this team is really just one player from being in the top 4 and already locked into the tournament. And yes we had one player who would have made that difference. But there are several others that could have.
While I don’t know that we were after Battle, we did go after Edwards. Ray J Dennis at Baylor. And of course Max Abmas. All 3 are difference makers.

We wanted Battle. I think we overlook the fact Kulama got into foul trouble and had to sit much of the 2nd 1/2. I am a homer but some of his fouls were ? to my eyes. Rewatched the game and I have to give Battle his due, made some fantastic shots while well-guarded. Be happy we won and move on!!

Reading through the play-by-play is really interesting, might have to re-watch the 2nd half (I would allow myself to knowing the outcome).
Anyway, some have called this a tale of 2 halves, but it really wasn't. We led by 22 at halftime, then with 11:56 to go in regulation we still led by 21 with the score 45-66. So the two teams played each other about evenly the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half.
Then at the 11:56 mark Kaluma got his 4th foul and went to the bench, this is where the game really turned to WV's favor imo..shows how important Kaluma was (and is) to the team.
But the really disastrous time period was from the 8:12 to 4:37 mark. With 8:12 to go we still led by 17, 55-72. Then we did not score, not a single point, until the 4:37 mark. Stuck on 72 that whole time. Meanwhile WV scored 12 points to make it 67-72 before we scored again.
Astonishing WV came back to take the lead. Also pretty amazing we were able to get it to OT...with 1 minute to go we were down 4, 79-75...WV did not score again while we scored 4 to send it to OT.
