Sports Illustrated Layoffs

Sports Illustrated, once considered the standard of sports journalism through its writing and photography, will lay off staff after a licensing deal fell through, the magazine's publisher said on Friday.
The publication's union said the layoff could involve "possibly all" of the NewsGuild workers represented. But SI senior writer Pat Forde disputed earlier reports that the entire staff was laid off, saying on social media, "There still is a website and a magazine. That said: Ugly, brutal day with many layoffs."

Another dare I say former "iconic" institution bites the dust. There was a time when I anxiously awaited the next issue, long ago mind you, I have not perused it for years. I can tell you when and where I was when I read the Futility U article , a black day in this Cat's life.

I’m not going to argue about it here any further than saying that I disagree, it is not extreme.

When your swimsuit models include obese women and transgender folks in bikinis, it's not hard to imagine that would hurt sales for the sports lovers who buy the magazine or access it online in the first place.powercat5000 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2024, 6:45 pmI’m not going to argue about it here any further than saying that I disagree, it is not extreme.

Honestly it had been so long since I'd thought about, let alone paged through a Sport Illustrated I really kind of forget about it. I guess never found much in there to read on the Cats. I do still have a copy of Futility U and also a copy of the Sports Illustrated with Rolando sinking his jumper against Oregon St - "The Mighty have Fallen" - I think.stlcatfan wrote: ↑January 19th, 2024, 7:55 pmWhen your swimsuit models include obese women and transgender folks in bikinis, it's not hard to imagine that would hurt sales for the sports lovers who buy the magazine or access it online in the first place.powercat5000 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2024, 6:45 pm

Only time I'd thought about SI in the past several years was when swimsuit model issue would come out. I'd look through it and it was pleasant. Now, not so much and wouldn't even consider it. This is my opinion. To each their own if folks want to dabble in that, but it's just a fact what they have tried will dissuade a large portion of the subscribers. It's best just to stick to what you do or brew or sell and stay out of the polarizing topics.
